Hendry et al. Figure1

Computer generated skeletal models in stereo depicting the creation of an apyrimidinic cavity in the B form of DNA and the fit of an amino acid L-isoleucine into the apyrimidinic cavity. The view of the DNA is from the major groove with the codon on the left and anticodon on the right. A space filling view of the molecules is shown in figure 2.

Interactive molecules corresponding to the three parts of this figure can be viewed using the RASMOL viewer (Macs, windows or unix machines supported). More information on interactive molecules is available in the Reader's Guide. Select User from the Colors menu to see the molecules color coded as in this and subsequent figures. Color coding is based on the CPK color scheme:C = white, O = red, H = cyan, N = blue, S = yellow and P = orange. Click on the images below to download the interactive molecule (in PDB format).

A) The double stranded triplet sequence 5' ATC 3', 3' TAG 5', a codon-anticodon for L-isoleucine.

B) The cavity 5' A_C 3', 3' TAG 5' formed by removal of the pyrimidine nucleotide pdT.

C) the complex 5' A-ILE-C 3', 3' TAG 5' formed by insertion of L-isoleucine into the apyrimidinic cavity.
